How is PAD treated?

Initial treatment of PAD usually revolves around risk factor modification, antiplatelet therapy (blood thinners) and a supervised exercise program. Medications may be used as well.

Revascularization (the restoration of an adequate blood supply through either a balloon and stent procedure or bypass surgery) may be considered if symptoms are not responsive to this initial treatment strategy.

  • Quit Smoking

  • Control Your Diabetes
Your hemoglobin A1C should be less than 7.

  • Manage Your Blood Pressure
Blood pressure should be below 140/90 (130/80 for those with diabetes or chronic kidney disease).

  • Lower Your Cholesterol
Independent of cholesterol-lowering effects, statin use has been shown in small studies to improve walking distance and speed in patients with PAD.

  • Antiplatelet Therapy
Aspirin (or clopidogrel) is often used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) or stroke.

  • Supervised Exercise
This exercise toolkit from the Vascular Disease Foundation is a great resource.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
