SVM 21st Scientific Sessions
6th Board Review Course
April 29-May 2, 2010
Intercontinental Cleveland Hotel
Cleveland, Ohio USA
The Society for Vascular Medicine's 2010 Annual Meeting is the premier multidisciplinary educational event in vascular medicine. The meeting provides needed education and training through:
- Scientific Sessions that provide updates on current trends in vascular medicine, information on clinical trials and new treatment options for managing vascular disease
- The Vascular Medicine Board Review Course that provides a comprehensive knowledge base for those seeking certification as a vascular medicine or endovascular specialist
The SVM Annual Meeting exposes the vascular practitioner to the discoveries and trends in pharmacotherapy for preventing adverse vascular events; vascular and molecular imaging; endovascular intervention and devices; pathobiology of vascular diseases; as well as management of the associated medical disorders of metabolism and coagulation.

ICAVL Online Accreditation to Launch in August
The much anticipated ICAVL Online Accreditation application will be available in late August for use by laboratories when applying for accreditation or reaccreditation. The ICAVL (the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories) is pleased to make this innovative format available to the noninvasive vascular community as the Online Accreditation application greatly improves the application process.
New format is extremely user-friendly
- Online help is provided throughout the application.
- Most questions are linked to the related Standards.
- Progress of application completeness is tracked.
Application data is easily accessible
- Data is retained and can be worked on consistently between accreditation cycles.
- Accessible from any Internet-based computer (allows work from laboratory and other offsite locations such as home offices, etc.), by multiple users.
- Upon application completion, data is transmitted directly to the ICAVL.
All laboratories that have previously purchased the ICAVL Accreditation Materials will be provided free access to Online Accreditation; each laboratory will receive its personalized login and password information by mail in late August. For those purchasing the Accreditation Materials for the first time, ICAVL Online Accreditation will be available via an order form on www.icavl.org (from the Log In area in the right sidebar, select 'Create New Account').
The ICAVL will accept applications through Dec. 31, 2009, using either the previous ICAVL electronic application or the new online accreditation. However, all laboratories are strongly encouraged to begin utilizing the new Online Accreditation due to its many positive attributes and ease of use.
Laboratories with questions about the new Online Accreditation or the application process in general are encouraged to contact the ICAVL staff by phone at +1-800-838-2110, or by e-mail via the staff directory on the Web site.

Society for Vascular Nursing Releases Patient Care Guideline Published in June Issue of Journal of Vascular Nursing
The Society for Vascular Nursing (SVN) has released the first in a series of guidelines being developed that will focus on the nursing care of patients with vascular disease. Working as a collective group of experts, members of SVN have developed guidelines based on the latest available evidence supporting patient care, 2009 Clinical Practice Guideline for Patients Undergoing Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA), which appears in the June issue of the Journal of Vascular Nursing published by Elsevier.
The intent of the guideline is to improve outcomes for patients undergoing endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms and ensure continuity of care across the population. It addresses assessment, diagnostic studies, medications, interventions and education in preoperative, perioperative and postoperative care.
Jay D. Coffman Young Investigator Awards
In honor of Jay D. Coffman (1928-2006), distinguished internist and researcher of vascular medicine and clinical cardiology, SVM sponsors an annual award in vascular medicine. Twenty-seven posters were accepted for display and five award finalists gave oral presentations at SVM's 20th Annual Scientific Sessions May 14 in Denver. Poster abstracts were published in the May 2009 issue of Vascular Medicine (Volume 14, No. 2).
First place was awarded to Michael Mestek, PhD, from the University of Colorado-Boulder for his presentation, "Influence of Abdominal Adiposity on Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation in Overweight and Obese Adults."
Jeffrey S. Berger, MD, from Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania garnered the second place award with his presentation, "Aspirin for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials."
Third place went to Owen MacEneaney, MS, from the University of Colorado-Boulder for his presentation, "Influence of Adiposity on Endothelial Progenitor Cell Function, Apoptosis and Telomere Length in Humans."
Other finalists included Firas Al Solaiman, MD, Malek Al-Hawwas, MD, and Esther Soo Hyun Kim, MD, all from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
