Society for Vascular Medicine

2026-2029 SVM Strategic Plan

Mission

To elevate the discipline of vascular medicine and transform vascular health.

Vision

A world where vascular disease is detected early, optimally treated, and ultimately prevented.

Core Values

SVM is defined not only by what it does, but by how it operates and what it believes. The following four values were identified and affirmed by the Board during the 2026 strategic planning process. They reflect the lived experience of members, the culture of the organization, and the commitments that distinguish SVM from other professional societies.

Community

SVM is a professional home where physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, researchers, and other professionals across the spectrum of vascular care find belonging, connection, and support.

  • We welcome members regardless of specialty background, training pathway, or career stage. Our multidisciplinary membership is a strength, not a complication.
  • We cultivate genuine relationships across career levels. Accessibility between senior and early-career members is not incidental – it is intentional.
  • We believe that a society’s culture is felt before it is described. Members should experience belonging from their first encounter with SVM, whether at a meeting, through a mentorship connection, or online.

We will preserve and strengthen this community culture as we grow, recognizing that size does not have to diminish warmth, and that community can be operationalized through structure without losing its authenticity.

Excellence

SVM holds itself to the highest standard of quality in clinical care, education, research, and organizational conduct – and it expects the same of the field it represents.

  • We define excellence broadly: in the care our members provide to patients, in the educational content we produce, in the rigor of the research we support, and in the credibility of the positions we take.
  • We are committed to being trusted. What comes from SVM – a guideline, a statement, a webinar, a board certification – carries the weight of unbiased, evidence-informed expertise
  • We do not settle for being credible when we can be excellent, and we do not accept excellence without credibility. Both standards apply.

Excellence is not a standard we apply to others – it begins with us.

Mentorship

SVM invests in the people who are building the future of vascular medicine, recognizing their importance in the sustainability of the field.

  • Mentorship within SVM is a behavior, not just a program. It happens in hallway conversations, in committee work, in how past presidents remain engaged, and in how senior members make time for those who are still finding their way.
  • We recognize that vascular medicine lacks formal specialty recognition, which makes mentorship more important, not less. Without a clear institutional pathway, people find their way into and through this field because someone guided them.
  • We commit to making mentorship accessible to all members, not only those who are already embedded in leadership or located at major academic centers. The longitudinal mentorship program, speed mentoring, and new member orientation are starting points. We will expand and improve them.

Mentorship in SVM extends across dimensions of professional life – research development, career navigation, leadership, and community-building – and is available across career stages, including for advanced practice providers.

Scholarship

SVM advances knowledge in vascular medicine across its full expression – research, clinical guidelines, education, and innovation – and positions the Society as the field’s leading intellectual resource.

  • Scholarship within SVM is not limited to academic publication. It includes the synthesis and dissemination of knowledge, the development of clinical standards, the generation of new evidence, and the education of the next generation.
  • Not every member is a researcher, but every member benefits from scholarship and contributes to it. A clinician who applies guidelines rigorously, an educator who designs curriculum – all are part of a scholarly community.
  • We are committed to building the evidence base that demonstrates the value of vascular medicine.

Innovation, discovery, and advancement are expressions of scholarship. When SVM members define a disease that was previously undefined, create a registry where none existed, or establish a standard of care where there was none, that is scholarship at its highest form.

Strategic Priority 1: Education and Pipeline

Goal: Educate broadly to address the growing burden of vascular disease.

Objectives

  • SVM has a growing, documented pipeline of newly board-certified vascular medicine physicians.
  • SVM’s educational reach has expanded meaningfully, with participation across all platforms increased by 20% and programming accessible to audiences beyond vascular medicine.
  • SVM operates with a structured, standardized educational portfolio framework that brings coherence and consistency to all programming and partnership decisions.

Strategic Priority 2: Research and Scholarship

Goal: Discover, validate, and promote innovations in vascular health.

Objectives

  • SVM has a robust, credible evidence base that demonstrates the clinical and economic value of vascular medicine specialist involvement in patient care.
  • SVM is a recognized producer of clinical guidelines and consensus statements that define and advance the standard of care in vascular disease.
  • VSS is established as the premier venue for showcasing original science in vascular disease, attracting high-quality research from both SVM members and the broader vascular community.
  • SVM is a home for cultivating the next generation of vascular researchers, with structured programs that develop early-career members into active contributors to the science of the field.
  • Vascular disease research produced by SVM members is broadly disseminated and consistently attributed to SVM, strengthening the Society’s visibility as a thought leader across all forums.

Strategic Priority 3: Membership and Community

Goal: Grow and cultivate an engaged membership.

Objectives

  • SVM members at every stage and in every role have a clear, compelling understanding of the value of membership and a positive, structured experience from the moment they join.
  • SVM membership has grown beyond 1,000 through a diversified, intentional approach to recruitment and retention across multiple clinical communities.
  • SVM has a stronger, more intentional trainee and early-career pipeline, with more trainees entering and remaining engaged in the Society across their careers.
  • SVM members have meaningful, tangible opportunities for professional growth and connection that sustain engagement and deepen their investment in the Society and the field.

Strategic Priority 4: Visibility, Positioning, and Brand

Goal: Be the leader and trusted resource on vascular health.

Objectives

  • SVM and the field of vascular medicine are represented by a clear, consistent, compelling brand identity that is actively used across all organizational communications and by members when representing the Society.
  • SVM’s online platform is a high-quality, user-centered resource that accurately reflects the breadth and credibility of the field and serves as a destination for members, clinicians, and patients alike.
  • SVM is recognized externally as the leading voice and trusted source of expertise in vascular health, with its thought leaders consistently visible and credited across all platforms and settings.
  • SVM has an active, structured advocacy presence that advances the interests of vascular patients and the field at the patient, institutional, and policy levels.

Cross-Cutting Priority: Specialty Recognition

Specialty recognition was identified as the single most important near-term organizational priority for SVM. It is understood as an outcome that will be enabled by progress across all four strategic priority areas, and it is already the subject of active work by the Specialty Recognition Task Force.
